Led by singles standouts Alex Trinh and Jennie Tong, the North Bay League’s badminton bests are in the section tournament Saturday.

Coming off the league finals, 13 singles players and 18 doubles teams from the Empire are entered in the North Coast Section championships at Newark Memorial High School.

For the first time the section championships are divided into two divisions — large and small schools. While the change could help more Empire players and doubles teams advance, even the region’s top players face difficult draws against typically strong opponents from South and East Bay schools.

Trinh, from Santa Rosa, and Tong, from Montgomery, were the NBL most valuable players.

Tops in doubles were Lauren Gross and Katherine Gross, Montgomery; Albert Nguyen and Tyler Krause, Montgomery, and Jason Nguyen and Tiffany Gaig, Windsor.

Highlighting league play, Montgomery went undefeated, and three teams — Santa Rosa, Casa Grande, Windsor — tied for second.
