Small school basketball: South tops North in All-Star matchup

Middletown’s Tyler Rockwell and Sonoma Academy’s Austin Orr came up big in the final minutes as the North squad rallied to beat the South, 68-60, in the Redwood Empire Small School All-Star basketball game Saturday night at Rincon Valley Christian gym.

Rockwell scored eight points in the final 13 minutes while Orr contributed five.

After falling behind by double digits, the South came to life early in the second half and took the lead, 42-40, with 13:45 remaining on a basket by RVC’s Cavin Hawkins.

Rockwell answered with a basket and Orr’s 3-pointer gave the North the lead for good, 45-42.

The North had four players in double figures: Archbishop Hanna’s Tony Tovaraz (14), Clear Lake’s Adrian Perez (12), Summerfield Waldorf’s Sawyer Lloyd (10) and Rockwell (10).

RVC’s Garrett Robert led the South with 13 points and Technology’s Waleed Atallah finished with 11.

In the girls game, which featured seniors from large and small schools, Alicia Mehtlan, Aaliyah Sowards and Claire Donnelly led the South squad to a 75-37 victory over the North.

Sowards (Maria Carrillo) had a game-high 18 while Mehtlan (Willits) contributed 16 and Donnelly (Montgomery) had 14.

The North led 27-14 at intermission and put the game away with a 37-4 burst that began at the start of the second half. Sowards had 14 points after the break, one more than Mehtlan.

Donnelly did most of her damage in the first half scoring 10.

Cloverdale’s Madison Stewart (10) and Healdsburg’s HelenAnn Haun (nine) also had strong games for the winners.

The North was led by Piner’s Sarah Artesaros and RVC’s Sarah Robinson with eight apiece.
