Former Empire standouts fall short of podium spots at world swim trials

Both Maya DiRado and Molly Hannis qualified for the final race in their events Wednesday at the Phillips 66 National Championships & World Championship Trials swim meet at Indianapolis, but neither was able to win a spot on the podium.

DiRado, a Maria Carrillo High School graduate who swims for Stanford University, finished fifth in the 200-meter freestyle a day after qualifying for a trip to the world championship meet next month in Barcelona, Spain, by placing second in the 200 butterfly.

Hannis, a Santa Rosa High School graduate who swims for the University of Tennessee, finished eighth in the 200 breaststroke, the first of her three events at Indianapolis this weekend.

Hannis will be back in the pool this morning for her preliminary heat in the 50 breaststroke.
