Maya DiRado, a Maria Carrillo High School graduate and a member of the Stanford swim team, fell short in her attempt to reach the 200-meter butterfly final race at the world swimming championships in Barcelona.

DiRado was a surprise qualifier in the 200 butterfly because it was even she only recently added to her competition repertoire. She advanced through Wednesday’s preliminary round, but finished with the 12th-best time in her semifinal race. The top eight swimmers advance to the final.

Her time in the semifinal race, 2:08:28, was faster than the personal-best 2:09.12 she posted at the U.S. championship meet in June that advanced her to the world meet.

DiRado was scheduled to be back in the Barcelona pool today for the 4×200 freestyle relay and is scheduled to race in the 400 individual medley Sunday.
