Santa Rosa JC raced to a 48-0 lead by halftime and then rested most of its regulars as the Bear Cubs opened the season in Ukiah with a 54-7 win over Mendocino College.

It was Lenny Wagner’s first game as head coach and he saw plenty of reasons to smile.

“I was happiest with the play of the offensive line,” he said. “We only brought five to the game and they continually opened holes for the backs and didn’t allow a sack.”

Making up the line were: Dante Cattaneo (Montgomery), Roy Thomas (Piner), Calvin Sandeen (El Molino), Dylan Sayge (Redwood) and Brian Jones (Florida). Nick Reynolds (Rancho Cotate), who usually plays tight end, was deputized as a center.

The Bear Cubs rushed for five touchdowns and the defense scored two. The other points came on a 75-yard pass from David Sowards to Andre Davis.

K’Lan Anderson (Vallejo) was the only Santa Rosa player with multiple touchdowns. He scored the game’s first points on a 19-yard run, and later in the second quarter, he took it in from the 1.

The defensive touchdowns came on a 27-yard fumble recovery by Taylor Biaggi (Windsor) in the first quarter and a 32-yard interception by Raevon Smith in the third quarter.

Santa Rosa finished the afternoon with six takeaways.

“I saw a lot of positives,” said Wagner, who coached at Mendocino in 1998-99. “Of course, we still have many things to improve upon, but this was a good first step.”

The Bear Cubs play at home Friday night against Diablo Valley in another non-conference game.
