Perseverance paid off Friday night for Elsie Allen High’s long-struggling football team.

Richard DePaz ran for three touchdowns as the Lobos snapped a 12-game losing streak and defeated Willits, 34-0, before a big, raucous crowd at Elsie Allen.

“I don’t know where our team will go from here, but I know that we’ll compete,” said Lobos coach Madison Lott.

After starting this season with consecutive losses, this year’s Elsie Allen seniors entered the game against Willits with a 1-28 record in their four seasons on campus.

Everything changed on Friday.

DePaz scored from 3 yards to get the Lobos going. Alex Hermisillo kicked the first of four extra points to make it 7-0.

Jalen Busby’s 5-yard touchdown run and point after put the Lobos up 14-0.

DePaz raced in for touchdowns of2 yards and 8 yards, respectively, in a 20-point second quarter.

The 27-0 lead made it clear that these Lobos would not finish 0-10 as their teams did in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012. “The blocking was outstanding,” Lott said of the offensive line featuring Manuel Cordova, Ezequiel Rayas, Randy Ramirez, Adan Arguetta and Ramon Zavala. Zavala and Rayas are sophomores. The others are juniors.

Busby caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Alexis Villegas to give make it 34-0 at the half.

“Our players are starting to understand the speed and physicality of the game,” Lott said.
