Football: Coaching staffs feature mix of new, veteran faces

Empire prep football has a deep and venerable stable of coaches.

A number move among programs seeking new opportunities and challenges. Others are fresh to the prep ranks.

The following assistant coaching additions reflect such changes this season.

Larry Gondola: Returning as an offensive consultant and quarterbacks coach, Gondola was offensive coordinator on two Gauchos teams that reached the North Coast Section finals. He retired after another strong season, in 2009. Gondola earlier was head coach at Marin Catholic for 17 years winning three section titles, followed by a run leading the College of Marin program.

Les Richardson: The Gauchos’ new defensive line and assistant offensive line coach. Richardson was head coach for Santa Rosa and has been a longtime assistant at Rancho Cotate and Tomales.

Chris Hoke: Defensive backs coach. Hoke was Windsor head coach in the early 2000s. An Empire assistant for a decade, Hoke was Analy’s defensive coordinator and more recently a Sonoma Valley assistant.

Cas Banaszek: Offensive line coach. New to the prep ranks, the former 49ers All-Pro is back in the game working with young players. Coached at California in the early 1980s and was an assistant offensive line coach for the 49ers including the team’s first Super Bowl winner. Banaszek played 10 years with the 49ers.

DJ Sexton: Offensive coordinator. Sexton returns to run the Windsor offense after directing the Analy junior varsity last season. Sexton previously was the Windsor junior varsity coach and also has been an assistant at Analy and Cardinal Newman.

Shawn Garrity: Running backs coach. Garrity was a longtime Maria Carrillo assistant on offense, working with receivers and running backs.

Jeff Stanley: Strength and conditioning coach. Stanley has been an assistant track coach at Petaluma. The football position was created by Petaluma head coach Rick Krist.

Bob Everhart: New to the prep ranks, Everhart coaches outside linebackers and the Trojans’ defensive backfield.

Keith Shoulders: Offensive and defensive line coach. A first-time prep coach, Shoulders bolsters the Tigers staff.

Dave Bos: Junior varsity head coach, varsity assistant. Bos moves up the road from Vintage high, where he was a varsity assistant and junior varsity assistant.

Luke and Eddie McMullen: Junior varsity and varsity assistant coaches. The twins are St. Helena alumni brought on to help the growing Saints program.
