ZIEMER COACH OF YEAR; UCSD WOMEN WIN TITLE
Sonoma State's Marcus Ziemer has been selected California Collegiate
Athletic Association men's soccer coach of the year.
Ziemer, in his 12th season at SSU, led the Seawolves to a first-place
finish in the CCAA North Division. SSU was eliminated from the conference
tournament Friday by Cal State Bakersfield, which plays Cal State Dominguez
Hills for the championship today at 1 p.m. at Sonoma State.
The women's title was decided Saturday at SSU, with top-seeded UC San Diego
(15-2-1) edging UC Davis, 2-1.
Kristin Jones scored two goals, the first in the 15th minute. But the
Aggies (11-6-2) evened the match when Ashlee Brutzman converted on a corner
kick from Rohnert Park's Cynthia Rail. Jones scored the winning goal 40
seconds into the second half.
The victory earned the four-time national champion Tritons an NCAA West
Region berth with Davis also likely to get one of the three spots. Sonoma
State has an outside chance of getting in the regional with the field to be
announced today or Monday.
