Maria Carrillo senior A.J. John will play college basketball at Pepperdine University.

A 6-foot-7 post player, John plans to sign a national letter of intent to play for Pepperdine after making a verbal commitment to the school.

Today opens the early signing period for college basketball. John will sign the letter at Maria Carrillo High School this morning.

“Pepperdine is in a great location,” John said of the Malibu school. “I thought I connected really well with the team and what they’re trying to do there.”

An all-NBL honorable mention selection as a junior, John led Maria Carrillo in both scoring and rebounding last season.

A handful of major college basketball programs showed interest in John starting in the spring, he said. He also played AAU basketball this past summer with the Oakland Soldiers 17 Blue team. He said he received his first offer, from Colgate, in July.

The last Empire player to earn a Division I basketball scholarship out of high school was Windsor’s Tanner Giddings, who signed with Fresno State in 2012.

John credited his time playing with the Soldiers, in addition to working with personal trainer Cary Hiner, with helping him get to the next level.

John said that maturing and realizing the things that he has to do to improve his game helped him grow.
