Santa Rosa JC’s football team is in line for a bowl game today as it wraps up the regular season at San Mateo. Kickoff is 1 p.m.
The Bear Cubs, ranked No. 5 in Northern California, take a 6-3 record into the finale. No. 2 San Mateo is 8-1.

The Bears Cubs will learn their postseason fate on Sunday.

First, however, Santa Rosa will try to slow down the second most potent run offense in the NorCal Conference. Counting the 670 yards the Bulldogs gained last Saturday against De Anza, San Mateo has amassed 2,759 yards on the ground. Only Butte, the conference leader, has gained more (2,841).

It could be a long afternoon for the Bear Cubs, as they’re far from being at full strength.

“We’re thin everywhere, especially on the defensive line,” coach Lenny Wagner said. “We’ve had more than 20 players go down with injuries that caused them to miss games or for some, the rest of the season.”

Darrian Roman, who played his high school ball at Windsor, is the latest Bear Cub to go on the injury list. The running back/linebacker is out with a broken thumb, fractured arm and high ankle sprain.

“The guys that have managed to stay healthy are playing hard and with heart,” Wagner said. “When a player gets hurt, guys will volunteer to fill in at a new position. That’s why I love this group.”

Leading the San Mateo running game is George Naufahu. He’s No 1 in the conference with 12 rushing touchdowns and averages 100 yards per game.
