SRJC to meet Modesto in bowl game

Santa Rosa JC’s football team learned Sunday the school has been selected to host the Golden Valley Bowl.
Modesto will be the Bear Cubs’ opponent in Saturday’s game at Bailey Field. Kickoff is 3 p.m.

This will be SRJC’s first bowl appearance since 2008.

“We’re excited,” coach Lenny Wagner said. “This was a goal from the time we started preseason practice.”

Santa Rosa will bring a 6-4 record into the postseason and the Bear Cubs finished 2-3 in the NorCal Conference.
Modesto comes out of the Valley Conference where the Pirates were 3-2. Overall, their record is 5-5.

The schools have played three common opponents. Both lost to Butte and San Mateo while Modesto beat American River (43-42) and the Bear Cubs lost to that team (55-21).

“We hope to have some of our injured players back for the bowl game,” Wagner said. “We’ll see how the week goes.”
Santa Rosa has had more than 25 players miss playing time because of injuries.

The all-conference squad was announced Sunday and seven Bear Cubs made the first team: K’Lan Anderson, Dante Cattaneo, Andre Davis, Anthony Ezrim, Blake Richmond, Darrian Roman and Vaimaa Taito.

Two former Empire girls soccer stars played key roles in helping Belmont Abbey College (North Carolina) advance to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Finals on Sunday in Hickory, N.C.

Sophomore Theresa Mateo (Cardinal Newman, 2012) and freshman Mariah Meuse (Rancho Cotate, 2013) are starting midfielders for Belmont Abbey.

On Sunday, Mateo and Meuse scored penalty kicks to help the Crusaders beat Lenoir-Rhyne on penalty kicks, 7-6.
During the regular season, Meuse had three assists in 22 starts. Mateo started nine games and had a goal and an assist.
Belmont Abbey will face Wingate in the regional championship on Friday.
