NCS girls tennis: NorCal’s best arrive for singles, doubles tournaments

The top female high school tennis players in Northern California will converge on Santa Rosa on Thursday for the NCS singles and doubles championships.

Santa Rosa High will host Division 1 participants while Division 2 action will take place at Cardinal Newman.

The first two rounds in all four brackets will be played today.

Division 2 will conclude Friday. Division 1 survivors won’t be back on the courts until Monday.

Play gets under way at 10 a.m. each day.

Representing the Redwood Empire in singles will be Maria Carrillo’s Fu Long and Petaluma’s Maddie Thomas. Long was invited after winning the NBL Tournament while Thomas took the SCL title.

Sonoma County players qualifying for the Division 1 doubles tournament are Santa Rosa’s Haley Lyons and Laura Ockenden, and Analy’s Hillary Brennan and Kate Stewart.

Kelseyville’s duo of Mary McCallister and Claire Vargas are in the Division 2 bracket.

Long and Thomas are returning to the tournament for the second year in a row. Both were eliminated in the first round a year ago.

The way Long has improved her game in recent months, she figures to do much better showing this time around.

“I have high hopes I will go far,” Long said.

“My ground strokes and serves are much better than last year.

“Also, I’m stronger mentally and that’s made a big difference. The competition in NCS is so much different than league. The players are a lot more dedicated.”
