One thing is certain about today’s Golden Valley Bowl pitting Santa Rosa JC against Modesto at Bailey Field.

There will be a lot of scoring.

Modesto has put up more than 70 points in two games and the Bear Cubs average nearly 30.

Kickoff is 3 p.m.

“Nobody has stopped them from scoring,” Santa Rosa coach Lenny Wagner said. “They run a speed-up offense similar to Oregon.

“We’re getting a few injured players back for the game and we also have a few surprises for them.”

Darrian Roman (Windsor), who plays both offense and defense, has been cleared for full participation as has defensive end Nick Kristofers (San Marin).

In addition, running backs K’Lan Anderson (Vallejo) and Spencer Morrow (Fairfield) have recovered from injuries and will see ample action.

The Bear Cubs have had more than 25 players miss games because of injuries.

Modesto comes in with a 5-5 record while Santa Rosa is 6-4.

The Pirates were the highest-scoring team in the Valley Conference with a 43.5 points per game average. They put up 76 in a win over Sequoias and 72 last Saturday while defeating San Joaquin Delta.

“They’re way better than a .500 team,” Wagner said. “Scouting them, I was really impressed.

“Teejay Gordon is the best quarterback we’ve played against all year. He’s a great runner and great passer. Nobody’s been able to contain him yet.

“Our game plan is to control the clock and keep Modesto’s offense off the field as much as possible. To have a chance at winning, we have to slow them down.”

If the Pirates had an Achilles heel during the regular season, it was too many turnovers.

“We’re going to see if we can cause a few more,” Wagner said with a laugh.
