NCS volleyball: Anderson Valley captures Division 6 title


Anderson Valley defeated Rincon Valley Christian 3-1 Saturday to capture its fourth straight North Coast Section Division 6 volleyball championship.

The Panthers lost the first game 25-25, then rolled to 25-22, 27-25, 25-19 wins to triumph at home.

Chelsea Teague’s kill shot finished the important second game win. Alex Farber’s winner finished the visitors and vaulted Anderson Valley to another crown.

Panthers coach Mike McDonald finished the season 26-2 after winning the North Central League III with a 12-0 record. RVC finishes the season with a 20-9 mark.

Anderson Valley advanced to the championship match by defeating the California School for the Deaf (Fremont) on Wednesday, 25-11, 25-23, 25-19. The Eagles had won the Bay Counties League with an 11-0 mark and finished 24-9.

Anderson Valley entered the final week of the season ranked 20th in the California Division 5 rankings. The Panthers only losses of the season came to Division 5 Convent of the Sacred Heart on Sept. 17 in the Rincon Valley Christian Tournament and then on Oct. 19 to big school powerhouse Healdsburg in the Greyhounds’ own tournament.

Anderson Valley finished the season on a seven-match winning streak, including a 25-10, 25-8, 25-16 victory over El Sobrante, the eighth seed, in the second round of the tournament. Anderson Valley had a first-round bye. Rincon Valley Christian also opened with a bye, then beat St. Bernard (Eureka) 25-17, 25-23, 25-15. A win over Mendocino followed for the North Central Leage II power, 25-17, 25-23, 25-15.
