Maria Carrillo’s section champion girls soccer team has been recognized for its No. 1 national ranking with the presentation of the Army National Guard Trophy as part of the MaxPreps Tour of Champions.

Sgt. 1st Class Jimmy Pera made the presentation to coach Debra LaPrath and the Pumas during a ceremony at halftime of Thursday’s boys basketball games between the Pumas and Cardinal Newman.

This was one of only 10 trophies distributed nationwide by MaxPreps. The Tour of Champions is sponsored by the Army National Guard and recognizes the finest high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls soccer and boys and girls basketball teams.

The tour was inaugurated in 2005 and has honored more than 450 high school teams in the United States.

The Maria Carrillo girls soccer team complete the 2013 season with a 20-0-1 record capped off by a 2-1 victory against Montgomery to claim the North Coast Section championship.
