SRJC basketball: Bear Cub men unwilling to share conference title

Depending on the outcome of tonight’s game at Haehl Pavilion, the Santa Rosa JC men’s basketball team will either win the Big 8 Conference outright or share the title with visiting Cosumnes River.

“This is definitely our biggest game of the year,” SRJC coach Craig McMillan said. “We don’t want to settle for being co-champs.”

The game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. as the second half of a doubleheader. In the opener at 5:30, the Bear Cubs women host Cosumnes.

This is the second meeting between the men’s teams. On Jan. 28 in Sacramento, the Bear Cubs prevailed, 83-78. “We’re expecting another close game,” McMillan said. “Cosumnes has a lot of firepower.”

Santa Rosa (11-2 in conference, 18-8 overall) has won seven straight and 15 of 17.

Cosumnes is 22-7 and 10-3.

Leading the Bear Cubs with 15-points-per-game averages are Alec Kobre (Montgomery) and Matt Hayes (Elk Grove).

The SRJC women bring a 10-3 conference mark and 18-10 overall record into tonight’s game while Cosumnes is 8-5 and 17-10.

The Bear Cubs (10-3, 18-10) trail San Joaquin Delta by one game. If SRJC wins and Delta loses tonight at American River, the Bear Cubs will earn a share of the conference title.

Gretchen Harrigan is Santa Rosa’s offensive leader, scoring 24.9 points per game. That’s second-best in the state.
