THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Representing 26 high schools, more than 1,000 track and field athletes will converge Friday at SRJC’s Bailey Field for the second Santa Rosa Twilight Invitational.

Competition begins at 1 p.m. with open competitions combining junior varsity and varsity athletes. This leads up to the 7 p.m. start of an “elite” set of competitions with the top eight entrants in each event based on performances coming into the meet.

Badminton report

Badminton reaches the halfway point in North Bay League play this week with Santa Rosa on top after defeating two-time defending champion Montgomery.

The perennial powers again are tough to beat. Santa Rosa defeated Montgomery by a single match. Casa Grande, Windsor and Analy follow in the 10-team NBL.

Top players on the boys side include Riley Harden, returning All-Empire selection from Analy; Liam Galbraith, Santa Rosa; Dylan Freitas, Montgomery, and Nick Ogden, Casa Grande.

On the girls side, several All-Empire players are back. Undefeated so far is Claudia Rohrs from Santa Rosa. Other returning All-Empire players are Emily Hulsman from Casa Grande, Vicki Nguyen from Piner and Serena Uppal from Montgomery.

The season culminates with the North Coast Section championships May 17.

JaJuan on track

JaJuan Lawson, above, is not only the best quarterback in the Empire, he’s also one of the area’s fastest prep athletes.

Until last week, the Casa Grande senior had run the fastest 100 and 200 meters of the current track season.

Surpassing Lawson in recent meets were Analy’s Kyle Vannetti and Ukiah’s Hugh Pegan.

Vannetti’s time for the 100 was 11.17 while Pegan completed the 200 in 22.33. Lawson’s best times for the distances are 11.21 and 23.17.

Lawson, the reigning All-Empire Offensive Player of the Year, signed a letter of intent in February to play for the University of New Mexico.
