Krist, Baumgarten 
earn all-state honors

Petaluma High School’s Joelle Krist and St. Vincent de Paul’s Ursyla Baumgarten have received all-state honors in softball from CalHiSports.com.

Krist was named second-team all-state among players from medium schools and Baumgarten was selected first-team all-state among players from small schools. The infielders both led their teams into the North Coast Section playoffs this season.

Krist’s Trojans were eliminated by Livermore in the Division 3 second round while Baumgarten’s Mustangs reached the Division 5 semifinals before falling to Ferndale in a 6-5 loss.

According to MaxPreps.com, Krist batted .527 with 11 home runs and 47 RBIs and Baumgarten batted .490 with 19 RBIs in 61 plate appearances.

Krist has made a verbal commitment to the University of Arizona. Baumgarten verbally committed to the University of Redlands.

BIG RACE, BIG NAMES

This year’s Wine Country Half Marathon will have a prominent name from the world of running lead the pack, though he will not be competing in the event.

Meb Keflezighi, the winner of the 2014 Boston Marathon, 2009 New York City Marathon and an Olympic silver medalist, will be leading male runners on an EliptiGO bike during the race in addition to being the guest speaker at the race expo and race dinner. Women’s running legend Mary Decker Slaney will lead female runners. The race, to be run on Sunday, July 20, will start in Napa and finish in Sonoma Plaza.

American half marathon course record holder Ryan Hall will be racing in the men’s event. His national record time is just under one hour, at 59:43. Four-time defending race champion Tesfaye Alemayehu is also competing, and holds the course record in 1:02:38.

Two-time 5,000 meters U.S. champion Lauren Fleshman highlights the women’s event, and will also be a guest speaker at the race expo.
