Two key players from Maria Carrillo’s great 2014 baseball season have been recognized among California’s prep standouts.

The Pumas that made the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball teams are Peter Hoge — on the third team — and joining him is teammate Andrew Vaughn, named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball Underclass Second Team.

In a breakout season on the mound, Hoge anchored a stingy Carrillo pitching staff. A senior lefthander, Hoge went 10-1 with a 0.76 ERA, five complete games and five shutouts. He was also a top batter in his senior season, hitting .337 and notching 22 RBIs on the season. He’s also the All-Empire Large School Baseball Player of the Year.

Vaughn, a second baseman, was another key contributor to Carrillo going undefeated in North Bay League play and reaching the North Coast Section Division 2 quarterfinals. A sophomore, he led the Pumas with a .433 batting average, amassed the most hits and doubles while also driving in 28 runs.

Vaughn made the All-Empire team the past two seasons.

The Empire also had a Petaluma and St. Vincent softball player on all-state softball squads.

Petaluma slugger Joelle Krist was named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Medium Schools Second Team. A junior corner infielder, she batted .529 with 27 extra-base hits, including 11 home runs, and 47 RBIs on the season. Petaluma went undefeated in Sonoma County League play and reached the NCS Division 2 quarterfinals. She has made the All-Empire Large School Softball the past two seasons.

Another power-hitting Empire infielder, Ursyla Baumgarten from St. Vincent, made the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Softball Small Schools First Team. A senior, she batted .490 with 19 RBIs on the season. St. Vincent went undefeated in the NCL II and reached the NCS Division 5 semifinals.

Baumgarten made the All-Empire team each of her four seasons at St. Vincent, and earned Player of the Year honors as a sophomore.
