All-Empire baseball players earn state honors

A trio of All-Empire baseball players have earned MaxPreps all-state honors.

Peter Hoge, from Maria Carrillo, made the MaxPreps 2014 California Medium Schools All-State Baseball Team. Both Cole Brodnansky, out of Clear Lake, and George Sammon, from St. Vincent, were named to the Small Schools squad.

Hoge, the All-Empire Large School Baseball Player of the Year, went 10-1 in leading Maria Carrillo to the best record in program history. The Pumas were undefeated in the North Bay League and reached the North Coast Section Division 2 playoff quarterfinals. Also an outfielder, Hoge batted .337 and totaled 22 RBIs on the season. The senior was a three-year varsity starter for Maria Carrillo. He also was named to the Cal-Hi Sports All-State Baseball team.

Brodnansky put together an outstanding junior season to earn All-Empire Small School Baseball Player of the Year honors. Brodnansky batted .440, with half his hits going for extra bases, and knocked in 26 runners in leading Clear Lake to an NCL I league title and a section playoff win. The catcher also threw out half of runners attempting stolen bases against him.

Sammon, a junior outfielder, helped lead St. Vincent to the NCL II title and the section playoff quarterfinals. Sammon led the Mustangs with a .413 batting average and 29 runs scored. He had 13 extra base hits and 19 RBIs, and the speedster was perfect in 16 stolen base attempts.
