Girls soccer: Montgomery nudges national power 2-1

A prep girls soccer series matching national powers began Thursday with Montgomery edging a Virginia school 2-1 in a mostly wide-open contest.

Today features a doubleheader at Montgomery beginning at 5 p.m. with the Vikings against Our Lady of Good Counsel, from Olney, Md. Maria Carrillo then takes on Bishop O’Connell, out of Arlington, Va. The series concludes with Our Lady at Carrillo on Saturday at 5 p.m.

“This is some really quality play,” said Montgomery coach Pat McDonald.

The rankings say it all. Maria Carrillo tops the latest nationwide poll from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Our Lady of Good Counsel is 10th in that poll.

Montgomery is ranked eighth in the coaches’ association West region poll. Bishop O’Connell finished last season ninth in the coaches’ association Mideast region rankings.

The series in Santa Rosa is the first time Montgomery and Carrillo have joined for a handful of games against opponents from outside California.

Thursday’s opener was dominated by the defenses early.

Then the Vikings broke on top. Emma Orosz battled for a ball on the right side and fed Taylor Ziemer for a hard shot that went in off the right post eight minutes into the contest.

Bishop O’Connell tied it up eight minutes into the second half. Sarah Wilson beat the Montgomery defense down the left side and scored with a low crossing shot. Answering a minute later, Orosz connected with Ziemer, who beat the goalkeeper with a low, far-post shot.

The visitors made a last run with Wilson volleying a loose ball into the clutches of Montgomery goalie Izzy Christmann.

I think he is saying they are the worst in reporting results.

Maybe the coach didn’t call the paper with any info. Soccer teams in the area are the worst. No roster in maxpreps or even a schedule at times.

Thats nice but Carillo beat that team 3-0 the next day..I dont see any articles about that..
