Boys basketball roundup: Petaluma defense holds against Rancho

Ben Sanderson had a season-high 18 points Tuesday night in Rohnert Park as Petaluma defeated Rancho Cotate, 54-40.

The nonleague game was close in the first half with the Trojans leading by four at intermission.

Petaluma won despite converting only one of 16 shots behind the arc.

Coach John Behrs said that while his team didn’t shoot well, he was happy with the defense.

“We kept the pressure on for the entire 32 minutes,” he said. “That wasn’t the case in our previous games.”

Demetri Morton scored 18 for Rancho and Gunner Mefferd had 10 rebounds.

KELSEYVILLE 60, HEALDSBURG 32

At Kelseyville, Kyle Ellis scored a game-high 20 points for the home team.

The Knights broke the game open by outscoring the Greyhounds, 22-8, in the third quarter.

Sophomore Landon Courtman had a solid game for Healdsburg with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

“We turned the ball over more than 30 times and you’re not going to win doing that,” Greyhounds coach Nick Galvan said.

CLOVERDALE 54, PIEDMONT 33

At Piedmont, the Eagles played solid defense in the second half after the teams were tied at halftime. Cloverdale won the second half, 32-11.

John McMillan led the offense with 16 points, two more than Marcus Poe. Jayson McMillan finished with nine to go along with 14 rebounds.

WILLITS 78, UPPER LAKE 28

At Willits, the Wolverines improved their record to 7-1.

“Our mantra this season is defense,” Willits coach Duane Nelson said. The only period Upper Lake finished in double figures was the second (12 points).

The Wolverines had three players in double figures: Will Smith (16), Dimitri Betts (14) and Ryan Hosford (11).

RV CHRISTIAN 44, SUMMERFIELD WALDORF 30

At Santa Rosa, James Leng had 13 points and 12 rebounds as RVC won its fourth game without a loss.
Joe Linn also scored 13 points for the Eagles.

EL MOLINO 52, ST. VINCENT 30

At Forestville, Lani Gaspar led the Lions with a game-high 16 points.
