SRHS, Analy take top prize in Battle of the Fans

Santa Rosa and Analy high schools have been named winners in the inaugural Battle of the Fans contest.

Started this year, the program encouraged student rooting sections to focus on positive cheers rather than negative chants targeting opposing teams and players. It is modeled after a statewide program in Michigan.

The contest, sponsored by Friedman’s Home Improvement and launched largely behind the efforts of Montgomery High School principal Laurie Fong and junior varsity boys basketball coach Steve Arrow, included all 15 high school campuses from both the North Bay League and the Sonoma County League. The four finalists included Windsor and Elsie Allen.

Participating schools submitted videos featuring their rooting section, as well as interviews with students. A judging committee visited the campuses of all four finalists on a game night to see the rooting section in action.

The winning schools, one from each league, will receive a banner and $1,000. Presentations are scheduled for Friday.
