Keith Adams tied a season high with 28 points and visiting Piner held off Elsie Allen, 65-60, to win the SCL Tournament on Friday night.

After trailing by eight points heading to the final quarter, the Lobos narrowed the gap to two and had the ball with 48 seconds remaining.

However, Levani Dominiko came up with a steal and fed Levi Lloyd. The senior forward was fouled while making a layup and converted the free throw.

“That was the big play of the game,” Prospectors coach Mike Erickson said.

It was 14-14 after one quarter and Piner led, 32-25, at halftime.

Adam Kuzmicki also had an outstanding game for Piner. He scored 16 points and pulled down 12 rebounds while also blocking six shots.

Lloyd wound up with 12 points.

For Elsie Allen, Joe Hoeup led the way with 24. Jalen Busby had 22.

This was the third time the schools played in 2015 with the visitors winning each game.

Lobos’ coach Madison Lott said the Prospectors deserved to win the third meeting.

“Piner outplayed us,” he said. “I was impressed with their effort. Every time we made a run, they had an answer.

“Keith Adams had an outstanding game. He made some clutch shots.”

Erickson said the game was a high point for his team.

“That’s as good as we’ve played, this season,” he said. “I thought both teams played well. It was a good high school game.”

The Prospectors are riding a six-game winning streak and their record is 20-6.

Elsie Allen, the league’s regular season champion, had a 12-game winning streak snapped. The Lobos, winners of a school record 22 games, have lost six times.

Both teams will receive invitations to next week’s North Coast Section Tournament.
