High school wrestling: Windsor boys advance; Empire girls at state

Eight Windsor High School wrestlers advanced through three rounds of the North Coast Section championships Friday in Union City, keeping alive their state tournament hopes.

All eight wrestlers reached the quarterfinals of the section championships, which begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at James Logan High School.

Top seeds Dominic DuCharme (145 pounds) and Beau Colombini (160) of Windsor are joined in the quarterfinals by fellow Redwood Empire top seeds Alex Garcia of Archbishop Hanna (132), Michael Klee of Cardinal Newman (145) and Nicolas Iverson of Ukiah (285).

In the team standings, defending champ Windsor sits in fourth place after the first three rounds, trailing De La Salle, Liberty and Las Lomas. Ukiah is in fifth place, with Cardinal Newman eighth and Healdsburg 16th.

Wrestlers who claim top spots at the NCS championships will advance to the state tournament next weekend in Bakersfield.

CIF GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

At Visalia, two Empire girls wrestlers are still in the running for a state title.

In the 170-pound weight class, Willits High School’s Gabby Agenbroad won her first two matches by pin to reach the semifinals.

In the 235-pound class, Rancho Cotate junior Vickie Espinoza advanced by decision in her first two matches to reach Saturday’s semifinal round.

Ukiah’s Harmonie Roberts (101 pounds) and Petaluma’s Michelle Larsen (235) lost in the quarters but are still alive for a third-place medal. Brigitte Mihalca (116) of Casa Grande, Christina Wilson (121) of Upper Lake and Angelina Canevari (137) and Kenya Henderson (170) of Ukiah also are in the hunt for third.
