Wednesday night’s the night. The 21st annual All-Empire Athletes of the Year ceremony at the Friedman Event Center in Santa Rosa.
It begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. The top athletes and top scholar-athletes from all the high schools covered by The Press Democrat will be in attendance and be introduced in front of family and friends.
There will be music provided by the Elsie Allen band, presentation of the four coaches of the year awards and the climax of the evening, the announcement of the eight scholarship winners — boys and girls athletes of the year, boys and girls scholar-athletes of the year with winners in both the large school and small school categories.

Irish medals for Scott
Petaluma senior Riley Scott earned four medals at the Irish Open Swimming Championship in Dublin over the weekend.
She scored a second-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke and a third-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Additionally, she was part of relay teams that placed second in the 400-meter medley relay and third in the 800-meter freestyle relay. Capping the weekend, she was voted team captain for the meet by her Team USA teammates.
Vikings head to SRJC
Montgomery’s duo of Erik Poulsen and Michael Septimo have committed to play basketball next season at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Poulsen, a 6-foot-11 center, and Septimo, a point guard, were recently selected to the All-Empire first team.
“I’m excited to get both those players,” SRJC coach Craig McMillan said. “Both have huge upsides and hopefully they’ll go from the JC to a four-year university.”
Fitchie still working
Tom Fitchie, who coached Poulsen and Septimo at Montgomery, recently retired as head coach but will continue to teach at the Vikings summer basketball camp.
Assisting him will be Zac Tiedeman along with current and former players at the eastside school. There are sessions for players from third through ninth grades with the first class beginning June 8. For more information, email email@example.com.
Hammell has offers
Corey Hammell, the All-Empire Player of the Year in 2013, is mulling scholarship offers from Alaska-Anchorage and Bemidji State (Minn.) now that his basketball career has ended at Santa Rosa JC (above). He will make his decision in a week or so. Hammell played for Cardinal Newman.
