NCS badminton: Empire players fall on Saturday



Windsor’s Ruth McQuown and Montgomery’s Karen Cai won Division 1 opening-round matches in Saturday’s North Coast Section badminton tournament at Newark Memorial High.

McQuown, who was unbeaten in NBL play, defeated Carondolet’s Courtney Shefffield. She then lost to Irvington’s Vanessa Yang.

Cai advanced with a win against Alameda’s Elyza Briones. She was defeated in the second round by Mission San Jose’s Angela Zhang.

None of the three Empire boys in Division 1 made it out of the first round.

Santa Rosa’s Oliver Staten was eliminated by Mt. Eden’s Jacob Duran 21-17, 24-22. Casa Grande’s Tony Lin lost to Berkeley’s Calvin Dai 21-10, 21-10 and the Panthers’ Philip Kong was beaten by James Logan’s Derek Hu 21-5, 21-4.

In Division 2 girls, Elsie Allen’s Mayra Gonzalez won her first-round match against Hercules’ Subhiksha Mani and then lost to Piedmont’s Daniela Siu.

Analy’s Maria Salcido, in Division 2, dropped her first match to Piedmont’s Tina Lee.

In boys Division 2, Analy’s Sydney Samal advanced to the second round by defeating Encinal’s Cody Yu in three sets. He then lost to El Cerrito’s Leon Wong.

Elsie Allen’s Omar Morales also won his first-round match with a victory against Kennedy’s William Zheng. In the second round, he was beaten by Crosspoint’s Bowen Yang. The Lobos’ David Huato lost his first-round match to Piedmont’s Alex Chang 21-13, 21-6.
