PINER 24TH IN NATIONAL SOCCER PRESEASON POLL
Two Santa Rosa high school boys soccer teams have been honored in a
preseason poll by Student Sports Magazine.
Piner, which claimed its first-ever North Coast Section championship last
fall, is ranked No. 24 overall in Student Sports' national Fab 50, and No. 2
in its West rankings.
Montgomery, a perennial contender in the North Bay League, is No. 5 in the
West.
Piner lost its top scorer, Moises Medrano, and All-Empire goalkeeper Derek
Shaffer, as well as coach Don Shaffer, but with eight starters returning,
impressed the pollsters.
The top-ranked team in the Fab 50 is Christian Brothers of St. Louis, whose
coach, Terry Michler, has compiled a 34-year record of 661-173-85.
Michler's 2004 schedule includes No. 6 University (Missouri), No. 19
Chaminade (Hawaii) and No. 23 Rockhurst Jesuit (Missouri).
Sacramento Jesuit (Carmichael) is No. 5 in the nation and No. 1 in the
West, the highest ranked California school.
Piner is the only other California school ranked in the Fab 50. The only
other California school in the West Top 10 is South Lake Tahoe, No. 9.
