CIF BOYS GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP: ROGERS LOSES HIS HOT HAND: FRESH OFF WIN AT TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS, MONTGOMERY JUNIOR SHOOTS 10 OVER PAR AT PATTERSON

Nick Rogers picked a bad time to have his worst round of golf in recent memory.

On Monday, the Montgomery High junior shot an 82 at the CIF Boys Championship at Diablo Grande in Patterson and missed qualifying for the State Tournament, which takes place in two weeks.

Rogers finished 57th in the field of 89 players who had qualified to play. Foothill's Ryan Maund took medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68. Rogers was trying to become one of the nine individuals representing Northern California at the State Tournament in Carmel.

Unlike last Monday's Tournament of Champions at Rooster Run in Petaluma, where he had seven birdies and took medalist honors with a 65, Rogers didn't have a single birdie on the Diablo Grande course.

Instead of birdies, he had eight bogeys and one double bogey.

"I felt really comfortable starting out," Rogers said. "Then things just didn't work out.

"I wasn't doing anything good and it all added up to a poor round. I can't even remember the last time I shot that high."

Gusting winds made the conditions far from ideal.

"It was tough for me to gauge the wind because it was constantly changing," Rogers said.

The low point of his round came on hole No. 16, a par 5 that measures 517 yards.

"I tried to go for the green in two and hit the ball in a water hazard," Rogers said. "I wound up taking a 7. That's the way things were going."

Rogers had been playing excellent golf leading up to Monday. On the heels of his 65 in the Tournament of Champions, he spent last weekend in the Fresno area and won a Northern California Golf Association junior tournament. He shot 71-73 to earn the trophy.
