High school cycling contest popular despite weather

A cycling spirit challenge filled bike cages at Santa Rosa and Montgomery high schools last week, despite the sometimes dreary weather.

The Bike To School Contest between the two rival campuses was held Feb. 2-6, right in time to catch some nasty weather. Despite the rain, 35 students rode to SRHS on Tuesday and another 21 on Thursday.

"I live six miles away. I usually bike to school only once a week, and never in the rain," SRHS junior Nik Kronick told organizers. "I biked every day this week. One less car!"

The week included fix-a-flat classes, rallies promoting alternative transportation and bike safety information.

Nor Cal Bike Sport/The Bike Peddler donated heaps of prizes. Montgomery student Gracie Burroughs won a $100 shop gift certificate and SRHS student Kevin Miller will be presented with a new Specialized commuter bike on Sunday during the Amgen Tour of California.

Sponsors of the event included Nor Cal Bike Sport/The Bike Peddler, The Climate Protection Campaign, Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition and the City of Santa Rosa.
